Morgan Motor Company: A brief history

Morgan

The Morgan Motor Company is a British motor car manufacturer. The company was founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan, generally known as “HFS” and was run by him until he died at age 77 in 1959. Peter Morgan, son of H.F.S., ran the company until a few years before his death in 2003. The company is currently headed by Steve Morris, who is not a family member.

Morgan is based in Malvern Link, an area of Malvern, Worcestershire and employs 163 people. Morgan produced 640 cars in 2007. All the cars are assembled by hand. The waiting list for a car is approximately one to two years, although it has been as high as ten years in the past.

In 1936, after a prototype had been tested in trials and on the track, a four-wheeler was exhibited at the London and Paris Exhibitions. The new model was called the Morgan 4-4 to differentiate it from the three-wheeler, indicating four cylinders and four wheels.

In 1966 the Triumph TR engine was nearing the end of its life and a suitable replacement was sought. The Rover Motor Company offered the forthcoming aluminium Rover V8 engine.

In the mid 1990s a remarkable new Morgan began to take shape. In order to remain competitive on the race track and to maintain Morgan’s reputation for producing world class sports cars, Charles Morgan decided to develop an entirely new chassis.

2009 was a very special year for Morgan Motor Company when the factory and enthusiasts from around the world celebrated 100 years of manufacturing the most iconic of British sports cars.

2009 was also a record year for four-wheeler Morgan production, however the trend was maintained throughout 2010 with yet another significant increase in the number of cars built.
